This directory gives you a taste of many of the producers of excellent food that I have discovered. These are my Food Heroes who are the stars of the TV series and Food Heroes books. The directory is organised into types of food and then into the different regions of Britain and Ireland.

Each entry describes the produce and whether it can be bought at the farm door or shop or by delivery, on the web or by mail order. Please select an option below to discover the Food Heroes in your region.


During the filming of Food Heroes, we decided to test whether there really is any difference between battery eggs and free-range ones. We had a panel of 15 tasters from the Crown Hotel in Carlisle, and we cooked each of them one battery, one supermarket free-range, and one free-range organic egg from a small local farm. The results were conclusive – 10 tasters voted for the organic egg, 5 for the supermarket free-range egg, and none for the battery egg. This is why the majority of our listed egg producers keep small flocks of free-range hens, feeding them a high quality ration or home-grown feed – we really do believe that this kind of husbandry results in the best eggs.

Clare Draper has a small flock of laying hens, a hotch-potch of all kinds of unusual breeds such as the Lavender Araucana and the Brown Leghorn. Much of the cheese we eat in Britain is made on an industrial scale in large commercial dairies. Tasting hand-made, traditionally produced cheese can be a revelation of complex flavour and texture. Here I have chosen growers who select carefully the varieties of fruits or vegetables they grow, with the aim of maximum flavour, not necessarily maximum crop size. Organic growers feature heavily; organic production encourages clean, rich soil, and that has to be good news for flavourful vegetables.

A key aspect of buying from one of the local producers we feature is that you will be tackling the food miles issue – the produce is sold where it is grown, not trucked around the country or even around the world, and this is a big factor in getting fruit and vegetables at the peak of freshness.

Trerethern Farm has been owned by the Geach family for over a century and our very own head chef at our cafe, Ross Geach, is the sixth generation to work the land there. The fishing industry is a hot topic at the moment, and news of over-fishing and the poor state of fish stocks often hits the headlines. I have tried to choose fishmongers who have a good understanding of the issues, fishmongers who endeavour to make a difference with the way they run their businesses. These are the fishmongers who tend to buy local fish, from boats that only go out to sea for a day at a time, and this has two major benefits. Day boats are considered one of the more sustainable ways to fish, and they also provide the freshest fish (it hasn’t been sitting on a boat that has been at sea for a week or more). Some of the fishmongers we list offer hand-lined and hand-dived fish, which is more sustainable still, and many hand pick the fish they stock direct from the port each morning, so they can be sure they are getting the best quality.

When I looked for fish smokers, I was keen to feature those that use undyed fish: the dyes can be used to hide poor quality fish. Within the directory, you’ll find producers using old-fashioned smokehouses, smoking the fish in an unhurried manner with great attention to detail.

So many of the producers featured here have a very old fashioned attitude to animal husbandry, and this almost always pays great dividends when it comes to flavour and texture. Many have chosen native or rare breeds of livestock, which respond well to slow, traditional rearing. The lamb and beef these listed producers rear will be largely grass fed, and the pork will generally be from free-range pigs; they are not forced to grow quickly, but allowed to develop gently at their own pace. These are the animals that develop good fat coverage, and when you factor in the proper hanging times that these producers allow their meat, the results tend to be very tasty.

Good bread is not always easy to find; modern commercial baking seems to be all about making bread as quickly and cheaply as possible.
