General manager at Rick Stein, Marlborough
Introducing our General Manager in Marlborough, Kevin Cole. He brings with him over 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry, including time spent working front of house and in the kitchen as well as 12 years running his own restaurants.
Originally from South Devon, his food and drink journey started in beautiful Salcombe before spending ten years gaining experience in various hotels in the south east and a brief stint sailing the Atlantic on the QE2 – working his way up from a waiter to Restaurant Manager in the process. Following this, Kevin made the move back to his home county to progress further in the industry as Food and Beverage Manager at a hotel on Dartmoor. Two years later, this role and some work experience at Gidleigh Park with two Michelin stared chef Michael Caines inspired him to open his first restaurant with his wife in the village of Stoke Fleming. Four years on, they expanded the business to include a nine-bedroom hotel and further 40 cover restaurant, which was awarded an AA rosette. A desire to bring up their children in a less seasonal location saw the family move up to the heart of Wiltshire, where Kevin worked as a Food and Beverage Manager for four years before the opportunity to run his own restaurant presented itself again – at Silks on the Downs, a gastro pub just outside of Marlborough. Here he was very hands-on, creating menus with the head chef as well as running front of house for the seven successful years he held the lease for.
He’s always liked Rick’s simple style of cooking and knows the Marlborough area well, so when he saw the job of General Manager advertised he knew he had to apply, and we’re chuffed to welcome Kevin to our team. His favourite dish on the menu (so far) is Rick’s Indonesian seafood curry, perfect with a bottle of Chalky’s Bite beer. Punchy at 6.8% ABV, its fennel and coriander notes work well with the heat of the curry.
Away from work, Kevin is a keen long-distance runner and an England Athletics qualified coach in running fitness. He also loves to explore the Wiltshire countryside with his wife, two daughters and dog, Tilly the Yorkshire Terrier Bichon Frise cross – the National Trust’s Lansdowne Monument being a favourite spot. Food and drink are never far away though, with dining out and entertaining at home also being popular day-off activities.
