Kitchen Assistant at Rick Stein's Cookery School
If you’ve been to our cookery school in Padstow over the last ten years, you’ll without doubt recognise this man, Phil. He quietly goes about his role as Kitchen Assistant; preparing trays of ingredients, sharing cookery tips with guests and keeping their wine glasses suitably topped up throughout the day.
Born and bred in Plymouth, Phil moved up to Watford aged 16 to follow his dream of becoming a professional footballer. After two years on Watford’s Youth Training Scheme he developed asthma, which sadly spelled the end of his journey working towards their first team and achieving his dream. With this, he moved back to Plymouth and started a career in retail. After a few years he wanted a new challenge, which presented itself in the form of the hospitality industry – where he worked his way up to Restaurant Manager at Butlins, Minehead. Then came the opportunity to move to Cornwall, where a friend of his worked in our Padstow Kitchen Team at the time. Ten years on, he’s the secret weapon that helps to keep our cookery school running smoothly.
He loves his role at the school because of the wide range of people he gets to meet – from every walk of life and skill level. Helping the guests to crack a new skill, whether it be filleting a flat fish or perfectly pan-frying scallops is always a joy and it gives him a sense of pride to lend a hand in the learning process. Ironically, Phil is allergic to fish, so his favourite courses at the school are Asian Street Food, Far Eastern Odyssey and Curry Club – with Rick’s beef rendang being his top dish.
